Florian Van Halewyck, Medical Affairs Manager, Belgium

What motivates you about your job?

Like many of us in the pharmaceutical industry, I often see myself as a small gear in a larger system dedicated to support patients. These patients can be anyone - our loved ones, friends, or even ourselves - who have faced challenges and require assistance to regain control of their lives. That's where we make a difference. Every gear, no matter how small, plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth functioning of the system.

Why did you choose Daiichi Sankyo as an employer?

As a close colleague once said, "In pharma, it's all about your molecules and your people." At Daiichi Sankyo, the strength of our molecules is evident from the numerous high-impact journal articles they generate. However, it was the people that truly persuaded me. Knowing a couple of talented former colleagues who had chosen Daiichi Sankyo as an employer, I reached out to them for their insights. Both of them highly recommended the company based on its culture and atmosphere. Their words convinced me, and I haven’t regretted it a single day.

How does your work contribute to the goals of Daiichi Sankyo?.

In short, the Medical Affairs team plays a vital role in positioning Daiichi Sankyo as a scientific partner. This involves various responsibilities, such as overseeing clinical studies and projects, utilising scientific publications to address field needs, organising satellite symposia for healthcare professionals at conferences, and delivering internal training programs to equip our Sales colleagues with the confidence to engage with healthcare professionals effectively.

What is the most rewarding part of working at Daiichi Sankyo?

The most rewarding aspect of working at DS is the opportunity to make an impact on patients' lives. As a Medical Science Liaison (MSL) and now an MSL Manager, I have always found fulfillment in going into the field and collaborating with healthcare professionals to develop meaningful projects. Each day, we strive to push the boundaries of knowledge and improve patient treatments. The knowledge that our efforts have contributed to improved patient care is truly invaluable and fills me with a sense of pride.

Looking at our three Core Behaviours (Be Inclusive & Embrace Diversity, Collaborate & Trust, Develop & Grow) – pick one and tell us what you connect with it.

A tough decision indeed, but I resonate strongly with the core behavior of "Be Inclusive & Embrace Diversity." During a one-year trip around the globe, I became captivated by the concept that when everyone is able to express their authentic selves, we all benefit. It is crucial that our careers are not hindered by irrelevant characteristics, and I would not choose to work for a company that perpetuates such limitations.
