DAIICHI SANKYO joins the IFPMA
Membership in the world pharmaceutical association is designed to further the company’s internationalisation

Munich, June 25th, 2008 – DAIICHI SANKYO, Co. Ltd., one of Japan’s leading pharmaceutical companies, has taken another step in its international expansion by joining a major pharmaceutical association:

The company is the latest member of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers & Associations (IFPMA), arguably the most important federation in the pharmaceutical industry around the world. Most leading research-based pharmaceutical companies are part of the global federation, as are a number of national pharmaceutical associations.

“If we want to achieve our goal of becoming one of Europe’s leading pharmaceutical companies by 2015 and of generating 70 percent of our turnover outside Japan, we must become active in international interest groups,” said Reinhard Bauer, the CEO of DAIICHI SANKYO EUROPE. “After all, there is hardly any other sector whose success is so closely linked to political factors as the pharmaceutical industry. The trend will grow in the future.”

By joining the IFPMA, DAIICHI SANKYO expects to gain support and information about political activities in the world’s many health-care markets. “We need a paradigm shift,” Bauer said. “Political leaders must stop viewing the health-care sector as just a cost factor. Rather, they must realize that it is also one of the economy’s largest growth engines.” As a member of the IFPMA, the company will work to bring about this paradigm shift, he added.
