Dr Jokichi Takamine (1854-1922) is a globally known scientist born in Japan. He was one of the first graduates from the Tokyo University and held degrees in engineering and chemistry. In 1894, he discovered the diastatic enzyme Taka-Diastase®, which became one of the first products marketed by Daiichi Sankyo. Even more important was his discovery in 1900, when he first isolated adrenaline. It was sold under the brand name Adrenalin®.

The donation of 3,000 cherry trees
Dr Jokichi Takamine spent many years of his life in the United States and is widely known for having contributed to strengthening the relationship between Japan and the US. In 1912, for example, he funded the donation of more than 3,000 cherry trees by the mayor of Tokyo to the city of Washington.

These cherry trees are located in the Tidal Basin area on the Potomac River and have become a major tourist attraction in the U.S. capital. This approach of integrating different cultures and business aspects for the benefit of all is still an important element of Daiichi Sankyo's hybrid business model today.

In 1913, Takamine became the first president of Sankyo and kept this position until his death in 1922. In memory of his great achievements, Daiichi Sankyo regularly awards the Takamine Memorial Prize to promote innovative research in life science.
